Welcome
to the Law Change website.
This
website has been set up in order to promote the Law Change Campaign.
The campaign has been organised by the bereaved friends and relatives
of Leslie (Fife) residents Kevin Braid and Nicola Johnston .
Kevin (41) and Nicola (23) were brutally murdered on October 10th
2004, by Nicola’s estranged husband, Shaun Alexander.
At
the same time, Alexander also attacked Kevin's friend Barry Greig
(41) to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
Because
Alexander pled guilty to the two murders, and did so "at
the early end of the scale" rather than going on trial, he
was given a life sentence of just 17 years in prison before he
will be allowed to apply for parole.
For
the attack on Barry, he received a five year concurrent sentence.
That is, for the attack on Barry, Alexander was not sentenced
to any additional time in prison.
Through
the Law Change campaign, we hope to build a strong case for tougher
sentencing laws for the perpetrators of such serious crimes as
Alexander's, and bring an end to excessive discounts for guilty
pleas.
We
also aim to ensure that victims of violence receive the protection
they require as soon as is practically possible, rather than them
having to live under a shadow of fear.
