The Crime - 10th October 2004

Kevin and Nicola were brutally murdered at Kevin's house, in Cabbagehall Place, in the Fife village of Leslie on the 10th of October 2004, by Nicola's estranged husband Shaun Alexander.

On the Saturday evening, Nicola had been working as a barmaid at the Burn's Tavern in the village of Leslie. After work, she and Kevin went for a drink in a Glenrothes bar. Here, they were confronted by Alexander.

They went to the local police station in Glenrothes to complain about the incident. As there was nobody available to deal with the matter, Kevin and Nicola said they would return the next day to file a complaint. They then went back to Kevin's house, as they were expecting the arrival of friends, Barry Greig, and Claire Ritchie.

It was later, back at Kevin's house that the four were simply enjoying themselves relaxing in Kevin's hot tub in his garden when Alexander appeared, brandishing a knife and crowbar.

Barry stood up to confront Alexander, only to be hit in the face with the crowbar. Following a second attack, Claire pulled Barry (badly injured) out of the tub and they escaped into the house where they called the police.

Kevin began to grapple with Alexander, who hit him with the crowbar and then stabbed him in the chest. He bled to death from the stab wound, which had penetrated a vein.

Nicola was heard screaming as she tried to escape Alexander. He stabbed her eight times, once penetrating her heart, and three times her liver. As a result of the attack, she died in the driveway of Kevin's house.

Alexander fled the scene in his car, and was apprehended at a police road block on the following evening (Sunday 11th October) near Perth. He confessed to the police, telling them: 'It's me you are looking for. I will come with you. I went a bit mental and did my wife and the guy she was seeing."

In the time after his arrest, Alexander took the police to the site where he disposed of the crowbar and knife, beside the A918, Glenrothes to Windygates road.

He was charged with two counts of murder, and one of attempted murder following the incident.
