Alexander
subsequently appeared at Edinburgh High Court, in front of Judge
Lady Smith on the 31st January 2005 for a ‘special hearing’.
Of
nine charges in total that were raised against him, he pled guilty
to three , the murders of Kevin and Nicola, and the assault on
Barry (to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement). He pled
not guilty to the other six charges, the details of which were
not made public. As a result of his guilty pleas, he did not have
to go on trial.
Throughout
the hearing, during the advocate’s narrative describing
the course of events, Alexander showed no remorse whatsoever,
continually shaking his head in disagreement with all that was
being said.
The
court was told that after his arrest, a friend visited Alexander
in prison. He told him: "I told you I would do it and I did."
Summing
up, Judge Lady Smith told Alexander: "You have pled guilty
to two charges of murder. There will be no alternative but to
impose a life sentence."
Court
was adjourned for four weeks to allow background reports to be
compiled, with Alexander due to reappear in court on 28th
February 2005 for sentencing.
At
a Press Conference held at Glenrothes police station the same
day Alexander pled guilty to his crimes, appearing alongside some
of Kevin and Nicola’s relatives, DI Jim McPherson of Fife
Constabulary revealed, “In over 19 years in the police service,
I can honestly say that this was without doubt the most horrific
crime I have ever had to investigate.”
